This meant bringing in trainers to work with the new animal talent. Black cats generally stay longer in animal shelters, partly due to superstitions associated with them, but Ian and Grace had a harder time than anticipated when scouting the perfect feline actors.

They eventually found Bobby, Boomer, Trevor, and Shaq. Each cat was recruited for its own unique talent. His talent is his ability to work outdoors and even at night. Most cats would find this too scary. Boomer is a rescue cat the trainers adopted. His part-time gig is helping us by raising kittens we have for other shows. He both enjoys and is good at that. I drove on a hour round-trip to get him from a rescue in Alberta. He loves it.

Trevor may be the most popular, but the most devoted to his role is Shaq. He works outside too, as long as he just sits. Despite believing it unsuccessful, Salem approached her later that night and took on the form of a cat, officially becoming her familiar. Sabrina stressed that she didn't view herself as his master but as equals.

Salem would later go on to protect Sabrina against various threats, including a scarecrow brought to life by Madam Satan [1] and from the sleep demon Batibat. A fierce and loyal familiar, Salem has saved Sabrina many times, such as from an animated scarecrow controlled by Madam Satan as well as guarding Sabrina when during her harrowing from the Weird Sisters when she first came to the Academy of Unseen Arts. Despite this, he likes to snooze but won't object to a good adventure.

Salems shares the standard abilities of a familiar. However, Zelda Spellman pointed out to Sabrina that he might not be as domesticated as sanctioned familiars, describing him as feral. Salem's true appearance resembles that of a dark, slim and long figure, but he can transform himself into a cat in order to blend into the realm of mortals.

According to Sabrina, Salem can also squeeze himself into any hole or crack. Salem performed this ability when he entered Sabrina's cell to protect her from all harm when she received her harrowing from the Weird Sisters. Salem also shape-shifted when protecting Sabrina from the scarecrow when she was going to retrieve the Malum Malus. They were used primarily as stand-ins during scene blocking and rehearsals, but were occasionally employed on camera if a scene required a fleeting Salem-shaped blur to shoot past the camera.

Boulden still receives the occasional Salem-related fan mail, but screen work for sort-of, not-really convincing faux animals has dried up considerably. The new version? Not so much. Aguirre-Sacasa has also hinted at the possibility of an episode delving into the backstory of the character. F--k You. Looking for more?
